Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

Last week was a milestone week for the students of Vega ISD.

Congratulations to the Vega Volleyball team who defeated Ropes in the Bi-district round of the playoffs and Van Horn in the Area round of the playoffs last week and Hico on Tuesday night in the Regional Semi-Finals round of the playoffs to advance to the Regional Finals against Windthorst this Friday in Childress.  We are so proud of our girls and their coaches for achieving another milestone for the volleyball program.  Please see the district’s webpage and Facebook page for pictures and more information.

We are also very appreciative of our community for coming out and voting in last week’s elections, including the VATRE for the school district.  The VATRE was approved by the voters and on behalf of our school district we are very appreciative and thankful for the support from all of our community members.

Our elementary and junior high students are working hard preparing for their UIL Academic contest this Friday in Borger.  We will take over 90 students to compete in various academic events and are very proud of the hard work they are demonstrating in preparation for their events.  I visited the elementary/junior high library this week and saw firsthand our 3rd grade students in a reading circle listening to a book being read to them.  Students were checking out library books to read, the chess team was practicing their skills by playing matches against one another, and the art team was practicing identifying different pictures and naming the artists.  I was even able to get in a chess match with one of our students and received helpful coaching from another one of our chess students!

In PE class last week our students were able to learn about helpful healthy habits through the Hope Choice program.  Our students are involved in the 4-H food drive to support the community.  Our junior high girls basketball teams were able to begin their season last week while our junior high football team played their season finale at Bovina.  Our high school football team completed their season with another hard fought game against Bovina last Thursday night in the rain.  Our boys played hard during every game this season and always gave their very best effort.  While the games didn’t end up the way we wanted, they boys played with the heart of a champion each and every time they put on their helmets.  We were able to recognize our seniors for band, cheer, and football at Senior Night last week after the football game.

Last week our seniors participated in mock interviews hosted by members of our community who took the time to be part of this fantastic college and career readiness experience for our students.  Our seniors prepared a resume, dressed up, and participated in an interview with community members.  Our seniors, then, were provided feedback and tips on different areas to focus on from the interview.  This will serve our students so well when they leave Vega High School and begin to interview for jobs, scholarships, and college admissions.  I was so impressed with this partnership between our school and community and how together we invest in our students' success after high school graduation.

We ended the week with our Veterans’ Day program where our students had the opportunity to recognize and thank the Veterans from our community for their service to our country and our FFA students presented each Veteran with a flower.  Our elementary students performed songs and our band performed the national anthem.  We were able to conclude the program with the annual Thanksgiving meal for our Veterans and our students and parents.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
