Dear Vega ISD Community:
The school year is off and running! Our Varsity Volleyball team is off to a 9-0 start capped off with winning the Dimmitt tournament over the past weekend. They will continue their work this week with more game action and tournament play in River Road. Our JV volleyball and Junior High Volleyball teams have started off their seasons as well notching victories over their opponents.
Our JV and Varsity Football teams have their second and final scrimmage this Friday in Panhandle. They are gearing up for next week’s Homecoming festivities and season opener. We are excited to see the teams in action. This morning while driving up to school I saw the Junior High football team going out to the practice field for early morning workouts. The opportunity to participate in these extracurricular activities is such a bonus for our students in Vega ISD.
Homecoming is next week, so please check out the district’s webpage for more information about Homecoming festivities.
Many school districts across the state have called for a VATRE (Voter Approved Tax Ratification Election) due to a lack of increased education funding while facing inflation and increasing costs of goods and services. A VATRE allows a school district to ask voters for permission to adopt a tax rate that exceeds the district’s state-calculated no-new-revenue tax rate. If approved, the proposed tax rate would result in over $500,000 in additional revenue for the District. If approved, this additional revenue will be used to fund the maintenance and operation of the district, including the ability to provide the enriching educational opportunities through staffing and programming found in Vega ISD.
The Vega ISD school board is proposing a tax rate of $1.3555 ($0.8555 for Maintenance & Operations & $0.50 for Interest & Sinking). This tax rate is an increase by 12 cents per $100 property valuation. Because this tax rate exceeds the district’s no-new-revenue rate, the district must conduct a Voter Approved Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) in November. If the VATRE fails, the District will not be able to adopt a tax rate above the no-new-revenue tax rate.
