Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

Happy Homecoming Week to the Vega community! Monday night’s bonfire was a great way to start the week and get excited for Friday’s Homecoming game against Crosbyton. Longhorn Spirit Week is underway with student dress up days this week - Camo Day is Monday, Tuesday is Tropical, Wednesday is Jersey Day, Thursday is Thrift Store Day, and Friday is Black and Gold Game Day. Be sure to visit our website for more information about the Homecoming events.

Three of our students earned academic honors from the College Board National Rural Recognition Program. This prestigious recognition celebrates academic achievement by having a GPA of 3.3 or above, test scores in the top 10% of the nation, and being in a rural or small town school. Please check out our district webpage announcements for more information.

Last week I had the opportunity to attend part of the River Road Volleyball tournament, the final football scrimmage in Panhandle, and the first Cross Country meet of the season in Canyon. Our students are already representing our school and themselves very well. It’s a lot of fun to see them taking care of business!

The Vega ISD school board is proposing a tax rate of $1.3555 ($0.8555 for Maintenance & Operations & $0.50 for Interest & Sinking). This tax rate is an increase by 12 cents per $100 property valuation. Because this tax rate exceeds the district’s no-new-revenue rate set by the state, the district must conduct a Voter Approved Tax Ratification Election (VATRE) in November. If approved, the proposed tax rate would result in over $500,000 in additional revenue for the District which would be used to fund the maintenance and operation of the district, including the ability to provide the enriching educational opportunities through staffing and programming found in Vega ISD. If the VATRE fails, the District will not be able to adopt a tax rate above the no-new-revenue tax rate. Property owners 65 and older with a homestead tax exemption would experience no change to their taxes as a result of the election.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
