Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

As we turn the calendar to April, we are beginning to see many of the end of year activities taking place. Our 5th and 6th graders traveled to the Amarillo Zoo and enjoyed the nice weather. Next week our high schoolers will begin taking their end of course exams, one of the requirements to meet state graduation standards.  Our seniors, 8th graders, and kindergarteners took their graduation pictures this week.  Our junior high and high school track teams will compete at the district track meet this week as well.

Last week our UIL Academic Team competed at the District Meet and had an outstanding performance with 12 Regional Qualifiers while competing in a brand new district.  The Calculator Applications Team and Mathematics Teams both won 1st place and were the District Champion teams and will advance to Regionals as a team.  Also our Accounting Team was the District Runner-Up Team and secured the at-large wildcard spot as a Regional Qualifier as the highest scoring Runner-Up Team in the Region.  We also had several students who placed 1st and were individual District Champions and many students who placed.  Be sure to check out our webpage and facebook page for pictures and more information.

More good news continues to follow our students as they continue to excel in their extracurricular activities.  Our Ag students competed in the WTAMU and Clarendon CDE contests this past weekend.  Five of our high school track athletes placed at the Panhandle Relays this past Friday.  Two of our senior basketball players were selected to play in the Texas Golden Spread All Star games.  The boys and girls golf teams traveled to Dumas for more tournament play.  The junior high track team competed in the Vega Triangular Track Meet in Vega.  The tennis team played in the Amarillo Relays with all of the players or teams advancing through the winner’s bracket.

We have kicked off our transfer campaign on our website and social media in order to increase student enrollment.  An increase of 25 students throughout the district (that’s about two students per grade level or about eight families of three school-age children each) would go a long way in providing the necessary state revenue for our district in order to maintain the level of service we currently provide.  Please note that to be eligible to be accepted as a transfer student to Vega ISD, all students must be in good standing with their current school district, have good attendance, and have no discipline issues.  Check out our transfer landing page on the district’s website that talks about our school and how to apply for a transfer.  If you feel comfortable doing so, please “like” the social media posts and share them on your own social media pages.  If you need any help in doing this, please reach out to our office. We would be glad to help.  If you know of any family who might be interested in attending an A-Rated district dedicated to student academic success with personalized learning and diverse opportunities, please have them reach out to our campuses or district office for more information.

This past Monday our School Board approved the hybrid 4-day calendar for next school year.  Our parents, community, students, and staff all provided strong support for this calendar through the surveys we sent out and our Site-based Decision Making Committee (SBDM) composed of parents, community members, and teachers was very thoughtful and asked good questions as they developed and recommended the calendar for consideration.  We are excited about how this will benefit our students and teachers.  One of the suggestions provided during the community Q&A sessions regarding the hybrid 4-day calendar option was to provide FAQs regarding the calendar on our website.  We will begin rolling this out in the near future to answer questions as we begin this transition.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
