Longhorn Weekly

Dear Vega ISD Community:

Welcome back from Spring Break! The saying that March comes in like a lion certainly applies to the weather we’ve been having. Time will tell if the rest of the saying comes true and if March in fact goes out like a lamb. My guess is that that lion will eat the lamb and we will continue with the windy conditions!

What a week for our students! Our high school students have already begun signing up for their dual credit college classes with Amarillo College for next school year. We were able to recognize seventeen of our seniors for completing 15 hours of college credit through Amarillo College. These students will all enter college next year essentially as second-semester freshmen! Our elementary students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade also had a special game day reward for meeting their AR goals. We love that our students are awesome reads and continue to build their literacy skills! We also had a high school team win the Stock Market Game competition where two of our teams built a portfolio that landed them 1st and 2nd place out of 136 teams in our region. Great job to Mrs. Fangman and our students on this accomplishment and for their hard work! Please see our district’s facebook and webpage for pictures and more information.

While we have rescheduled several of our events this week due to high winds, several of our teams were able to complete their competitions. Our girls golf team placed 2nd in the Vega Tournament on Monday. Also on Monday our girls tennis singles and doubles teams all won games at the Spearman tournament and one of our girls doubles teams won 1st place. Please see the district’s facebook and webpage for pictures and more information.

This Friday we will have an emergency escort send off for our two powerlifters who qualified for State. Be sure to wish Cason Lamm and Cash Black good luck in their ensuing competition.  Two other powerlifters also placed in the top 10 at the Regional Competition. We are super proud of their hard work and success, along with all of our other powerlifting athletes who worked so hard this season.

Right before Spring Break our FCCLA team traveled to Lubbock for the Regional Competition and four of our students advanced to the State FCCLA Competition. Vega FCCLA came home with two first place awards and a third place award at the Regional Competition. Our track athletes competed in the Longhorn Relays before Spring Break and the varsity girls team won 1st place at the track meet. All of our tracksters did great at the meet and we are proud of their efforts! Also before Spring Break, the tennis team competed at the Borger Tennis Tournament with our girls double team winning 1st place, the mixed doubles team and girls single winning 3rd place, and girls doubles winning consolidation finalists. Our Band also competed at the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and came away with a Superior Rating in Sightreading and an Excellent Rating in Concert. Combine that with a Superior Rating in Marching from the fall semester, our Vega Longhorn Marching Band has had a fantastic year. Be sure to congratulate Mr. Jackson and the band students for their success this year. Please see the district’s facebook and webpage for pictures and more information.

Thank you to our parents, teachers, students, and community members for responding to the district’s survey regarding feedback on a possible 4-day week for the calendar. The parent, community, and teacher feedback was strongly in favor of a 4-day week. We also want to thank everyone who attended any of the three Q & A Sessions we held this past week to discuss and listen to feedback about the possible 4-day week for the calendar. We will continue to provide FAQ information on our facebook page about this. If you have any questions about a possible 4-day week calendar, please reach out to your campus principal or to my office so we can help.

Thank you,

Jerry Adams
