Dear Vega ISD Community,
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We want to thank our amazing teachers and staff for everything they do to provide the exceptional learning opportunities for our students. We have planned lots of fun activities and games for our teachers and staff this week to celebrate them for Teacher Appreciation Week. Thanks to Tricia McKarns and Laci Reeve for coordinating the week’s fun activities. Thanks to our School Board for making breakfast burritos for our staff. Thanks to our PTO for providing meals for our teachers this week.
Last week I was able to experience several events that are unique to Vega ISD. Last Wednesday, the Methodist Church hosted the annual Strawberry Breakfast for our seniors. This was such a nice breakfast and event for our seniors. We appreciate the Methodist Church for supporting our seniors. We also had Bike Safety Day for our 5th graders. It was fun to see all of the bikes parked in front of the school and to learn about the field trip where our students bike around town to specific locations while properly using their hand signals and practicing safety. Our high school students raised over $1,000 for the Ronald McDonald House through the annual Student Council Volleyball Tournament. It was impressive seeing almost every high school student participate on a team and everyone having fun and competing together. I’m sure missing class for the day played no part in the joyful festivities! Also our FFA students held their annual banquet and awards ceremony and installed their new officers for next school year.
Congratulations are certainly in store for our two students who qualified for the State Track Meet and placed in their events! Jaz Martinez won a 5th place State ribbon for the High Jump. Diego Martinez won a 4th place State ribbon for 110 M Hurdles and a 5th place State ribbon for 300 M Hurdles. This week Maigyn Ellis competes at the State Golf Meet and we wish her all the best!
Also this week the Tennis team regional qualifiers will compete at the Regional Tennis Meet in Amarillo. We wish them all the best as well.
You may have seen some new signs about preventing human trafficking around the school grounds perimeter and in the doorways as you enter our buildings. We have posted these signs as a safety measure to bring awareness to our community, especially since I-40 and Highway 385 run through our town. Schools are required by the Texas Education Agency to post these signs in locations around the school that are likely to be viewed by all persons entering the premises.
We have been sharing the trends we received from the different questions on the survey over the past couple of months. A complete report of the feedback and trends from all of the Stakeholder Survey questions is on the district’s website and Facebook page. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback through the survey.
We keep mentioning this, but this is so important that we need to continue promoting it. As you know, our district has kicked off a transfer campaign on our website and social media in order to increase our student enrollment. An increase of 25 students throughout the district (that’s about two students per grade level or about eight families of three school-age children each) would go a long way in reducing our deficit budget. Please note that to be eligible to be accepted as a transfer student to Vega ISD, all students must be in good standing with their current school district, have good attendance, and have no discipline issues. Check out our transfer landing page on the district’s website that talks about our school and how to apply for a transfer. If you feel comfortable doing so, please “like” the social media posts and share them on your own social media pages. If you need any help in doing this, please reach out to our office. More students means more funding from the state. An increase in student enrollment is one of the ways the state allows school districts to gain revenue since there was no increased funding provided for public schools in this past legislative session.
