Superintendent Update for the Week of February 26, 2024:

Dear Vega ISD Community,
This past week has been a busy one for the students and staff of Vega ISD. We are
transitioning from our winter activities to the spring activities as we prepare to turn the calendar
from February to March. Here’s a rundown of some of the highlights in our school district.
Our girls powerlifting team is at the Regional competition this week in Colorado City. We wish
them good luck this week. They have worked really hard this season. Our boys and girls
varsity basketball seasons came to an end last week during playoff action. We are proud of our
girls basketball team reaching the regional quarterfinals in the playoffs and for our boys
basketball team for qualifying for the bi-district round of the playoffs. Both of our teams
showed determination and good teamwork throughout the season and we are proud of our
students and coaches for representing our school well this season.

Our art students have been working on projects in class for the VASE Art Competition where
their creations are judged with other art creations from across the region. Four of our students
earned the highest rating possible and another student earned the second highest rating
possible. I was able to see some of these projects while they were being created a few weeks
ago when Mrs. Rosas and I did a walk around in Mrs. Shugar’s art classes. Pictures of each
student with their project are on the district webpage and facebook pages so please be sure to
check it out.

I was able to attend the San Antonio Stock Show and Ag Mechanics Show this past weekend.
It was very impressive to hear each of our students explain their projects to me and see them
interact with the judges. Congratulations to our students and Mr. Newton and Mr. Osborn for
the continued success with all projects earning blue ribbons! Check out the district webpage
and the district and the Vega FFA Booster facebook pages for pictures and more information
about these accomplishments and recognitions.

Golf, tennis, and track practices have all started up and students are competing in different
tournaments and meets in these events. We are certainly excited to see our students showcase
their talents in these events during the spring semester.

Our seniors who need to earn their college readiness credentials took the TSIA test this week.
TSIA stands for the Texas Success Initiative Assessment. This assessment is mandated by the
Texas State Legislature and designed to guide Texas public institutions of higher education in
helping them determine whether students are ready for entry-level college coursework in the
areas of English Language Arts Reading and math. Students are exempt from this assessment if they meet college readiness benchmarks on the SAT, ACT, or complete a high school college preparatory course. There are some other exemption categories as well, but if a student does not meet these requirements, they may be required to receive developmental education academic support as determined by the institution. Oftentimes this support does not count toward the required hours for their degree plan, so it is good for the student to have this requirement met before enrolling in an institution of higher education.

With the fires in the surrounding areas this week, it was very impressive to see the community
support for one another in action. Every school has an emergency operations plan to provide
direction when emergencies occur. Because of the fires near Boys Ranch, their school district
evacuated their facilities out of an abundance of caution and they initially planned to come to
our school gym. Ultimately in coordination with county emergency operations officials, Boys
Ranch ISD went to the Vega Community Center and not to our school. However, our team was
ready to receive them and provide the support and hospitality that good neighbors provide when
someone needs help. I want to give a shout out to our leadership team who fielded the call and
request from them to come to our gym on Tuesday evening and came up to the building ready
to help. Thank you to Mrs. Rosas, Mrs. Porton, Coach Porton and our team members for
stepping up. Mrs. Fowler volunteered to come and prepare a meal for them if necessary. Our
School Board Members individually offered support and asked how they could help. I know the
county emergency operations staff did a great job in meeting the needs for Boys Ranch, and I
so much appreciate the level of support and readiness to lend a helping hand that the Vega
community provided.

Thank you,
Jerry Adams
