Superintendent Update for November 8, 2023:
I want to take a minute and brag on the 5th and 6th grade students and teachers at VISD. This past week, I was invited to “Sandwich Day” on Thursday. It was also National Sandwich Day, so I thought it was just a day in observance. As I asked questions, I found that “Sandwich Day” for Vega ISD means a lot more than just another day. The 6th grade class hosts the luncheon and they invite the 5th grade students to join them in bringing the sandwich fixings. The 6th graders invite key staff, serve the staff, and then serve themselves and the 5th graders on this special day. The adults that are invited are staff members that work directly with the 6th grade class as well as staff or school board members that are family members of a 6th grader. It is all about the kids being in charge and a service model that is steeped in tradition. Many of the teachers who help the students plan the event, experienced the luncheon as students.
I believe “Sandwich Day” was first experienced in 1992. It was the brainchild of Mrs. Delores Moore and her teaching partner Mrs. Jay McFaul. They were exploring practical ways for students to serve and to learn practical math applications. Calculating amounts of food and costs are a great teaching tool. The day takes planning, preparation, and dedication. Over the years, the traditions have not changed and today after 30 years of looking forward to “Sandwich Day” it has grown into an event that is exciting to parents, students, teachers, and the staff they serve. While it is only a single event, it exemplifies the culture and importance of preparing another generation at Vega ISD. And…the sandwiches are great!
